You are now standing on the dam overlooking Nydam. The dam was built in 1632. Nydam is one of two wetlands that were originally part of the old inner fjord, called Stavnsbøl Fjord. Eventually these wetlands were drained, but in the 1820s, there was still a lot of water in Nydam, which was fished from small boats.
It is said that in the old days you could sail all the way to Mjang Dam and on to Gammelgård.
Today, the river Strømmen runs in the old fjord bed, and there is rich wildlife along the river and in the reed forest in Nydam and Mjang Dam. The fjord was probably formed by a small meltwater river after the last ice age approx. 10,000 years ago.
